Family & Children Impact Story – New Beginnings

A Journey of New Beginnings and Resilience

In January 2023, Zahra and her family sought refuge in North Vancouver, escaping the turbulent conflict in their homeland. Eager to rebuild their lives, a thoughtful neighbour recommended they attend a free family drop-in program at Capilano Community Services. Recognizing the importance of fostering a sense of normalcy for her 4-year-old son, Navid, amid the challenges of resettlement, Zahra decided to attend the program.

Upon their first visit, Zahra and Navid were met with a warm welcome from the program’s staff and volunteers. Navid eagerly engaged in a variety of activities, from exploring toys and games to participating in painting sessions, music activities, and story time. Beyond being a recreational haven, the program emerged as a crucial support system, significantly contributing to Navid’s social, cognitive, language, and motor development.

For Zahra, navigating the complexities of settlement, the family programs went beyond mere enrichment for Navid—they served as a lifeline and source of resilience. Beyond Navid’s positive experiences, Zahra forged meaningful connections with fellow parents, acquired invaluable parenting skills through workshops, and received support and information during a pivotal phase of her life. This active engagement marked a transformative journey for Zahra, leading to improved language skills, enhanced confidence, and an expanded social network – and a return for Zahra to full-time employment.

Ultimately, the program paved the way for this family to thrive in their new home – a testament to the profound impact of community-responsive programs on the holistic well-being and success of individuals and families.
